Summary SEM + Turbosort (Preliminary)

Hello again,

due to the many requests for a summary on the SEM topic - here it comes:

1. I have still no really satisfying explanation, but some more details.
According to BDIS here in France and Belgium (European Headquarters) the
SEM itself is using a A/D converter to digitalise the signals, then applies
bitmap gating, and sends the sort decision back to the sorter.
All what is delayed by this procedure is apparently the drop-count (drop
delay) which is increased by approximately 1.2 drops. Also the display on
the computerscreen, compared to the Oscilloscope is delayed, but that's
only concerning the analysis part (data acquisition) not the actual sorting
decision.
Therefore according to BDIS there is no actual decrease in sorting speed or
precision, besides these 1.2 drops (apparently the difference between
individual nozzles normally causes much more of a problem...).

2. I have had several responses from people who have the SEM on their
machines and never/rarely use(d) it... but I have one response from
somebody who is using it in a 3 laser setup and works apparently great up
to 3000 cells/sec with high enough sorting purity.

3. Concerning Turbosort and SEM. According to BDIS the SEM is not able to
handle high-speed sorting, therefore as soon as you switch to High Speed
mode you won't be able to use the SEM. However there is no incompatibility
between SEM and Turbosort. If you sort at normal speeds with the Turbosort
setup, you can still use the SEM to apply non-rectangular gates.

Well that's pretty much all I could find out so far - concerning the price,
in the US seems to be between 7000 and 8000 $ (depending on negotiations
?), here in Europe it's a bit more expensive, but prices are negotiable -
at least here in France.

Bon hope that helps all those who were interested in the topic... and I'm
still interested if someone can provide a bit more technical background on
how it really works.
