It is my understanding that the 2-phenoxyethanol has bacteriocidal
properties (Merck Index). I have seen very few instances where the
preservative has somehow gotten in the way of performing flow cytometric
analysis. ONE EXCEPTION HOWEVER WAS IN SORTING...ON THE BD
FACSORT...when comparing the results of a sort using sterile 1x PBS vs.
the commercially available sheath fluid (a la preservative), I noticed
that there was a more significant portion of dead cells when sorting with
the phenoxyethanol laced fluid.
