Absolutely untrue - at least as far as the DOS and windows versions go (I
can't comment on the Mac version but I doubt its different).
EndLink is the add on that allows for direct import from a variety of online
databases. Endnote works perfectly well without it and certainly integrates
directly with a variety of word processors without Endlink being present.
(Endlink is however a v. worthwhile add on if you use any of the online
services).
Also volume discounts are available now - this was something that Nile and Co.
were criticised for in the past.
I'm a very happy user of Endnote (I've been using it since about 1991 or
1992). It even handles documents as large as a PhD thesis effortlessly. And a
100 page review paper with 700+ reference / 1000+ citations didn't even make
it cough!!

available (the demo has all of the features of the full version available but
