Recently I have a need for the photodiode used in the FacsVantage to measure
FSC. It was the same as the one used in the old Facstar. The BNC connector
came loose creating some noise.
I called BD and was told that the price of replacing it is an incredible
$3,072.00, not pesos, lira but good old green backs.
It seems to me that it is pure extortion. There is no high tech in this
little gadget that my former Radio Shack was able to handle a few year
ago(Radio Shack discontinued most of their hobby products).
Earlier I had a need for a PMT for my Facstar, BD price 1990, $3,000
(probably 10K now). I bought it from Hammamatsu for $125.00. Same with
pumps, pump controller for Fascan etc...where the margin was 5 to 1

It seems to me that we are entering the domain of collector for exotic cars.
Getting original parts from original supplier is cost prohibitive. What
about doing like the folks who collect antique Jaguars, Mercedes, MGB or
Triumph. Create a bulletin board giving suppliers of things that might go
wrong in flowcytometer.

Last, if you have successfully replaced photodiode from Facstar with third
party, please e-mail me.

Thanks in advance.
