Sort Enhancement Module

Hi,

We've upgraded our FACStar+ with the pulse processing+7th parameter option
(Fl3-2 on the second laser). Unfortunately the 7th parameter upgrade does
not deliver 7 parameter sorting. While sorting the SSC is disabled since
the 7th detector signal is routed through the Side Scatter electronics and
we end up with 6 parameter sorting. What we want is to be able to sort on
parameters 1-7. We have been told by BD that the only piece of hardware
providing that option is the SEM (Sort Enhancement Module). I briefly
looked through the SEM guide and I am not sure that for the money asked
(~$10K CDN) this is the best option. It seems unnecessary to me to add the
new sort control unit replacing the FACStar+ sorting card#10 just to add 1
sorting parameter (and I really don't care about nonrectangular gating +
other "options"). Are there any other hardware solutions we might consider?
If not, are there any people out there working with the 7th parameter
upgrade (I call it a downgrade!)+SEM configuration? How does the SEM
affect the dead time? What about sort purity and recovery? Is it like it
says in BD brochure that the sorting purity is ~95% at more than 5,000
cells/sec (interesting what do they mean by more.., sounds very ambitious,
isn't it?) and that the SEM "saves time by providing a pure population with
one pass" (they don't give numbers this time). Any response would be
greatly appreciated.

Best regards
