Tabulation of salary data

Hi Folks,

Last week, I posted a message in which I asked flow cytometry core lab
directors to contribute information regarding operator salary
structures. I asked for confidential information pertaining to the
experience of the operator, geographical location of their labs, and
type of institution.

I recieved several replies within 1 day of posting the message.
Replies trickled in over the next couple of days. However, I was
disappointed that I only received a total of 10 replies. Therefore,
those of you who expressed an interest in seeing the results of my
query must take the compilation with a very large grain of salt.

Here is the summary:

7 replies were from the Mid-west. Some of the labs employ several
operators with varying degrees of experience. For 0-2 years of
experience, operator salaries ranged from $23,000-~$27,000, with a
"mean" salary of ~$26,000. For 4-8 years of experience, salaries
ranged from ~$33,500-$35,500, and replies were very consistent. For
8-13 years experience, replies were again very consistent, with
salaries ranging from $40,000 (2 replies) to the mid-40K range (1
reply).

2 replies were from the East. However, in one case, it was difficult
to categorize the individual as an operator. At any rate, the salary
for these individuals (one with about 15 years of experience and the
other,?) ranged from 45K-65K.

Much to my chagrin, only 1 reply was from the West. Since this
individual knows what he/she makes, and in the interest of
confidentiality, I do not feel obligated to share this information, as
it would only be useful to people from the West who did not even wish
to reply.

I hope this informal survey was of use to people. Perhaps it can help
you negotiate a raise for your operators. To paraphrase one
contributor, many operators are really core managers, and therefore,
with their specialization, should be compensated at higher wages than
normal lab technicians.

If a "substantial" number of additional replies trickle in, I will add
them to the existing data and either post the new tabulation when I
return from a meeting on April 11, or perhaps will present the results
at the core managers meeting which appears to be working its way into
the agenda at the next ISAC meeting.
