In reference to the proposed Core Facility Managers meeting in Rimini:

I also think this is terrific idea, but propose that a more structured format
might be desireable. Perhaps a 2 hour interactive workshop with a manual that
had a compilation of "mailed" survey results in conjuction with a mediated
panel discussion with representatives from several facilities that differ from
one another on such topics as:

Budget: Salaries paid, Contracts paid,
User Base: Billable hours/instrument/day, Number of customers, ...
Fees: Operator mediated, Trained User, Private Industry, ...
Data Management: Storage Medium, Analysis Pkgs, Networking,
Promotional Ideas: Seminars, Videos, Flyers, Newsletters ...
Educational Ideas: College courses, Short Courses, In-house training on
sample prep, Workshops, Manuals/Books/Handouts
Instrumentation: Service Contracts, Grants for new ones, ...
Ancillary Services: Sample preparation, Image analysis, Microscopes, ...
Research & Development: New methods development, funding source, ...
Future Trends: Is FACS useage static, increasing, decreasing? ...
Others?

The panel discussion might facilitate a more diverse array of information
exchange on each of the topics in a defined time frame and would also offer
interaction with the audience on each topic as well. The nice thing about
survey results in manual format is that it could also be made available to
those who could not make the meeting. People could also breakout into
smaller groups later on in the meeting to "show and tell" information on
data management, education, or promotionals, etc... Just another opinion.
