Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Core Labs

Greetings from Oklahoma!

I would like to obtain some feedback from fellow Directors of flow
cytometry core facilities at universities, medical schools or other
academic institutions.

1. With times as they are, raises are few and far between in most
academic institutions, and I believe that many core lab directors are
finding it difficult to retain highly qualified operators for their
flow labs. I would be grateful if directors could e-mail me
information about their operator salary structure, years of experience
required to draw that particular salary, type of institution (i.e.,
teaching hospital or university), and geographical location (i.e.,
West, Mid-west, East).
I know that many of us must justify our budgets to some higher
authority each year. I think it would be nice if we could simply
approach our advisory committee and say "This is what other operators
with comparable experience are making these days. If we don't
compensate Mr. or Mrs. X at this level, we risk losing his/her
services." I believe that replies can be set up so that there is no
violation of confidentiality. If there is sufficient interest, I
would be happy to tabulate the results and then post them at a later
date.

2. At the last ISAC meeting, two kind individuals (Julie Auger and
Gary Salzman?) organized a workshop for core lab directors and
operators. I and others who attended thought this was a great idea
(if not just for the opportunity to whine a little bit into
sympathetic ears)! Last year's workshop was, I believe, somewhat
"spur-of-the-moment" and I was wondering whether plans are underway to
have another go at such a workshop at the next ISAC meeting.

Thanks in advance for your input.
