Biohazards

From: Francesco Mauro,
President of ISAC

I have been following also in the weeks following the Lake
Placid ISAC congress the comments and debate about the
sorting of biohazardous materials. Several people, the last
one Larry Seamer from Albuquerque, have been also suggesting
to me that ISAC should take a proactive role in
establishing, at least temporarely, a "biohazard material
policy". I fully agree with this proposal both from the
point of view of ISAC and as an investigator active in the
field of protection from biohazards.

Thus, I would like to form a "working group" to tackle the
problem and to prepare for ISAC some guidlelines to be
approved and disseminated by the society.

If there is an agreement, I would do the following:

- call for candidates ready to contribute (by e-mail
mainly) to the working group;
- select some candidates (if too many), integrate them
with some experts (if necessary), add a member from Europe
or other non-North-America countries (if not already
present);
- ask the ISAC secretary (and chair of the membership
committee) to act as a secretary/recorder of the working
group, and the ISAC office to give support if necessary.

I agree that the problem is urgent and that we should deal
with it before that government(s) agencies get involved. My
idea is that the draft of the guidelines, produced by the
working group, should undergo independent review (and
consultancy of other experts if necessary) and be presented
for approval to next ISAC council (June 1995).

I expect comments and volunteers through the Purdue
cytometry bullettin board or to me directly by e-mail.

Ciao,
Francesco Mauro
