Re: more networking questions

Since networking is topical on this list again, I would like to reinforce
Jo Trotter's comments!

We run a heterogenous net similar to that described by Jo. In the flow lab
we run HP310 & 340, Macs, IBM's a Unix server and even still have an old
PDP-11!

We use the unix machine as our central server for everything; all flow
files go straight to this machine and are then archived/retrieved as
required.
Buying this computer was the best thing I ever did! It also does all our
local network support (mail server, time server, bootp server & domain name
server). Since all this stuff comes with unix, no extra software was
required.

Most of the rest of our dept is Macintosh. So we also use CAP (Columbia
AppleTalk Package) on the unix machine. This whole setup has proved very
reliable (I haven't touched the CAP software for about 2 years, though it's
about time I upgraded!).

On the few IBM's we have, I use Farallon's PHONENET software. This gives
the pc Appletalk print/file services. We didn't go for NFS (Network File
Service - TCP/IP) as it was too expensive at the time.
There were also a few advantages, for us, with the Farallon software:

1/ all our laser printers are Apple. PHONENET allows printing directly
to these printers the same as working on a Mac.

2/ PHONENET has used the Apple/Novell ODI network stack for a long
time. This means I can run Appletalk, Novell IPX/SPX and TCP/IP protocols
at once through the same network stack on the pc's. Since our University
has standardised on Novell and Novell has standardised on ODI this was very
fortuitous!

I agree with Jo's comments on linux though I haven't tried it; yet!

Leon.
