Cancer Cells Grow Inappropriately

In cancer cells, signals that promote cell growth become stronger than those blocking growth. Such cells grow and divide inappropriately.

Example of growth signals in a non-cancerous cell:
Notice that there are more tumor suppressor genes active than proto- oncogenes. Therefore, cell growth is blocked.
Example of growth signals in a cell becoming cancerous:
Notice that some of the genes have mutated to become oncogenes. In addition, some tumor suppressors are lost. The net effect is increased tumor cell growth.
