The Cell-Dyn 4000 is essentially implementing a "two-platform" CD4 count on
a single instrument; it uses the hematology tube to get the WBC and per
cent lymphocytes, and the immunofluorescence tubes for CD3/CD4 and CD3/CD8.
Given the relatively long gestation period, I expected Abbott to add more
in the way of immunophenotyping capability to the instrument; I'm not sure
why they didn't. Unless I'm mistaken, the Cell-Dyn 4000's analyses do fall
within the CDC guidelines, and there are other clinical instruments, for
example, the BD FACSCount, that just do CD3/CD4 and CD3/CD8.
