Dear Qing Li,

There are several ways to connect Apple computers to a PC-network. I assume
that your Macs need to be connected to an intranet system. These systems
mostly run under DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) using TCP/IP as
transport protocol. Another point is that IT people do not like appletalk,
because it can disturb the network traffic. We solved this problem by
setting up a Macintosh server as a gateway. One ethernetcard in the server
is connected to our own network (running appletalk) and another ethernetcard
is connected to the intranet (appletalk disabled, TCP/IP enabled). The
server, running under MacOS X server, is part of the intranet just like any
other computer as a DHCP client. Within our own network the server is acting
as a DHCP host and controls all the traffic on our own network. We can
receive our mail via Outlook Exchange and we can do all the things we need
to do for flow cytometry without disturbing the intranet. In this case the
IT department have to deal with just one Mac. Setting up the server can be
done by using the assitants (starts up automatically after installing MacOS
X server).

Good luck,
