Paul - you raise an important issue in cytometry education, and indeed
education in general. I realize that there are apologists at both
poles of the 'distance learning' debate, and have noted Michael O's and
Jim L's online courses. It would be good to get some info on how
well these courses work, particularly from the learning end. For about
20 years, I have taught a classroom/lab based course on an Introduction
to the Principles of Flow Cytometry. Recently, I was invited to give
a three day course on the subject in Seattle. The organizers hoped to
get 15 to 20 folks to register, and they had to cut registration off
at 90! Perhaps you are sensing my bias. It seems to me that there
might be a hybrid strategy that merges technology with face to face
in a classroom.

Subject: Clincial Cytometry Meeting - On-Line learning opportuntiy

Colleagues:
To those attending the Clinical meeting:

At the Clincial Cytometry meeting in Orlando this weekend, I will be
presenting a free
workshop on Sunday from 1-2pm on new opportunities for On-Line Learning and
Training. I would like to encourage those of you who will be at the meeting
on Sunday
to drop into my workshop (well you have a choice of going to Coulter's I
guess at the
same time, but mine will be much more interesting!!)

On-line learning and training is definitely a growing area we all need to
learn more
about. It is an opportunity to hear about how cytometry education of the
future. These
learning opportunites will become important for those needing certifications
and CEUs.
The program is being offered by Multimedia Knowledge, Inc. (MMK) I need to
let you
know that I have a financial interest in MMK.

I hope that those at the clincial meeting will drop in to say hello, and see
what the
future of cytometry education might be about. We have some of the top people
in our
field signed on to teach these courses. You will recognize ALL of their
names!!!

Best wishes and safe travels to Orlando
Paul Robinson
