Since you posted your question, there have quite a number of diverse suggestions regarding what might be wrong with the Spinnaker. It seems lasers are as complex systems as patients after all! To summarize: (Emmanuel Gustin:) "It sounds as if there is something in the optical cavity, intermittently and temperature dependent. It could be just dirt. But the weak point of an ion gas laser is the cathode. After sufficient wear, the wires can sag into the optical cavity, stopping lasing. If that is the case, you need a new laser tube. (For a small laser, that usually means a new laser head.)" (Derek:) "... you are probably experiencing the symptoms of an over pressurized laser tube. The secret to keeping this laser alive and well at this point is to make sure you turn it on at least once a week and run it for an hour. A service tech once told me that oxygen can seep into the ion tube and cause increased pressure which will cause erratic lasing or no lasing at all. He indicated that this becomes a problem if the tube sits unused for a while." (Ray Hicks:) "My blasted enterprise did something similar earlier this year, it's probably unrelated, but it was due to the failure of a cooling fan within the power supply, which led to overheating after a short run and subsequent shutdown (length of run inversely proportional to output power)." Personally I was told by one technician at BD that it could be the tube, another suggested the tube's OK, but the power supply is failing. I just heard yesterday from BD that Spectra repaired our Spinnaker. I'm very eager to hear their final diagnosis....
