Sorry for the delay for the summary of this question. By far, almost everyone suggested Alice Givan's book, "Flow Cytometry: First Principles". This therefore seems to be one of the better books to introduce people to Flow Cytometry. Another book recommended by several people is "Flow Cytometry', by M.G. Ormerod. 2nd edition, 1999. Publ. by Bios, Oxford. ISBN: 1 85996 107 X. I was looking for books other than Howard Shapiro's "Practical Flow Cytometry", but this is still a good book, so I am including it on my list. A couple people suggested that if they are having trouble reading it, then they should probably stick with it as it is a helpful book. Other books recommended follow: Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting, A. Radbruch (Editor) ISBN 0-387-55594-3 "Flow cytometry and sorting" by M.R. Melamed, T. Lindmo and M.L. Mendelsohn published by Wiley Liss (Wiley and Sons Publication) ISBN 0-471-56235-1 "In Living Color: flow Cytometry protocols" - edited by Shelley Diamond and Sue DiMaggio "Introduction to Flow Cytometry" by James V. Watson. Cambridge University Press, 1991 "Flow Cytometry: A Practical Approach", 2nd edition by M.G. Omerod, ISBN 0 19 963461 0, this one is available from Sigma, I am told. These were all the books mentioned. The top 3 were Alice Givan's book, Michael Omerod's books and, of course, Howard Shapiro's book. One additional comment, I would imagine that all the books are more understandable with a little hands on experience by at least watching flow cytometry being performed. I learned from experience, though I did learn some things wrong or the hard way, but experience is a good teacher, if sometimes a hard teacher. Anyway, I hope that this is useful information.
