Doug,

I like Flow Cytometry A Practical Approach, 2nd edition by M.G.Ormerod from
IRL Press.  It is available in paperback ISBN 0 19 963461 0.  I agree that
Howard's book is difficult to begin with if you don't already have a basic
understanding of flow cytometry.
