Cells shrink when stained with SYTO13?

Dear all,

I am using the nucleic acid stain SYTO13 on natural aquatic samples to
investigate the bacteria and phytoplankton populations. However, whilst
comparing stained and unstained samples, it seems that some of the
phytoplankton populations have somewhat shrunk (i.e they have lower FLS
values). The extent of the reduction in FLS,however,is different for
different populations.

I was wondering if anyone has encountered similar problems with the SYTO
family of nucliec acid stains?
