      WELLCOME TRUST ADVANCED COURSES

     TWENTY EIGHTH ADVANCED COURSE

      Molecular Cytogenetics and Microarrays

      6th – 16th March 2001

Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambridge, UK

An intensive laboratory course to introduce participants to the use of
molecular cytogenetic methods and DNA microarrays for the analysis of
chromosome rearrangements. The course will be predominantly laboratory
based, but will include seminars by distinguished speakers who will present
state-of-the-art subjects. During the course, chromosome rearrangements in
a tumour cell line will be analysed by the students using the methods
detailed in the programme below.

 Programme

1. Spectral Karyotyping and M-FISH
2. Comparative Genomic Hybridisation (CGH)
3. Chromosome sorting and Reverse Painting
4. Mapping breakpoints with clone contigs and Fibre FISH
5. CGH on genomic DNA Microarrays
6. Expression analysis on cDNA Microarrays
7. Informatics and Data Mining
Informal tutorials will supplement the laboratory sessions.

 Course Instructors

DONNA ALBERTSON (UCSF, California), NIGEL CARTER (Cambridge), DAVID VETRIE
(Cambridge), PAT GORMAN (ICRF, London)

Confirmed Speakers include

DONNA ALBERTSON (UCSF), MICHAEL BITTNER (NHGRI), ANN-CHRISTINE SYVANEN
(Uppsala), HANS TANKE (Leiden), MICHAEL SPEICHER (Munich), MIKE STRATTON
(Cambridge)

 Participants

Applicants should be post-doctoral scientists or senior PhD students engaged
in relevant research. Applicants with molecular biology and/or some
cytogenetic experience will be particularly welcome. The course is
subsidised by the Wellcome Trust for scientists based in academic
institutions anywhere in the world. This is a residential course, without
exception, and there is a charge of £650 towards board and lodging.

 Applications

There are no formal application forms, but applicants should send a hard
copy of their full CV together with a 300 word outline of their current and
ongoing research plans, indicating the relevance of the course, to Dr Pelin
Faik, Advanced Courses Manager, Wellcome Trust Advanced Courses, The
Wellcome Trust, 183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE or tho the email address
below.

Notification of places will be in January 2001 at the latest.
