Hi Marcia, It has nothing to do with maclogin. We don't use a logon program and had the same difficulties. The problem is in the interface board in the calibur. Every time our system was restarted (after freezing cpu) we had to "reset" the calibur as well, the same way you describe. Somewhere on the interface board is a processor which is in close contact with the cpu, each time the cpu does not respond immediately to his requests the interface is locked and a restart of the calibur is necessary. Because restarting the calibur has negative affects on the lasers inside. We were not very happy with the calibur resets, not only for the warming-up period you have to wait for, but specially for the lasers lifetime that's shortened by frequent start-ups. Our BD service engineer solved this by putting a separate power switch for the electronics, the calibur it self isn't restarted every time and lasers are not switched off! Maybe you have to ask your service engineer to do the same with your calibur. Our users are able to login and then restart the computer to log off without having to ever turn the cytometer off. On the other hand, the FACSCalibur we have will not connect to the cytometer after being restarted unless the Calibur is also turned off and then back on. BD says that this is a normal problem and has to do with the incompatibility of MacLogin w/ the Calibur. Has anyone encountered this problem and found a way to circumvent it? If so, please let me know. Marcia Wade Flow Cytometry Technician University of Chicago Immunology Applications Core Facility 5841 S. Maryland Ave. Chicago, IL 60637 mwade@paramount.bsd.uchicago.edu
