Formalin is a formaldehyde solution usually 37% by wt formaldehyde and 10-15% methanol
to prevent polymerization of the formaldehyde.

paraformaldehyde is polymerized formaldehyde.

I think for fixing FACS samples you want to usually avoid methanol (alcohols) that
can result in the cells sticking together.
