  Tom -

  I believe the technician's diagnosis is correct.  We have had very
similar problems, complete with odor.  If the plug is burned, that's where
the problem is, or in the receptacle that it plugs into.  Our electrician
demonstrated that
the "grippers" in the receptacle that grip the plug prongs can lose
their grip, and thus give poor contact, heating, odor, etc.
