The Clinical Flow Cytometry Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital has an entry level opening for a flow cytometery technician. The downtown Boston lab is equipped with a 4 color B-D FACSCalibur with all the options, and FACScan. Interested and enthusiastic recent university graduates considering a biomedical career are encouraged to apply, as are those with some previous cytomety experience. The technologist is involved in processing a variety of specimens from patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and congenital and acquired immunodeficiencies. The variety of specimens that come to the lab are astounding and always interesting. These specimens are obtained from lymph node, bone marrow, fine needle aspirate, blood and cerebral spinal fluids. The candidates duties include specimen pick-up, preparation and analysis on the flow cytometer. The technologist works directly under the guidance of the senior medical technologist and lab director in choosing and following an appropriate monoclonal antibody panel and test for each case. Interaction with the primary medical staff is encourged. The Clinical Lab is in downtown Boston at MGH, and directly associated with the lab directors cell sorting /research lab in Charlestown Navy Yard. Universal safety precautions are followed in handling all specimens due to their potentially hazardous nature. The technologist also performs stem cell and OT3 monitoring as well as DNA ploidy and cell cycle analysis. Other duties include operation and maintenance of all other laboratory equipment. Additionally, the technologist may participate in teaching and training of pathology residents and fellows in flow cytometry techniques. Qualifications: Minimum of B.S. or B.A. degree in Biology or Chemistry or equivalent. Cytometry, immunology and computer science familiarity desired.
