Greetings, We received a specimen which gave me a headache. The patient is a preterm neonate. The leukogate tube has shown a ball of cells which are brighter than grans in CD14 and are also higher in SSC than grans. (http://www.cd4cd8.com/page1.html). The burst test has further shown that the big granulocytes are highly phagocytic without any stimulation. (http://www.cd4cd8.com/page2.html) Finally the burst test yielded two more strange populations in the scatter plot after incubation of whole blood with opsonized ecoli. (http://www.cd4cd8.com/page3.html), all of which are phagocytic (note that normally only 2 populations would be phagocytic : monocytes and granulocytes. this plot shows that there are monocytes (ungated) small/big grans (R2) and two weird populations that I don't know where they came from (R3 and R4 for a grandiose total of 5 phagocytic populations). If anyone has seen anything like that before or would like to speculate please let me know. Again I plan to post a summary of answers on the website as well as here.
