To all who responded here . . . thanks.
The solution (suggested by Leo Burke and Jaume Comas) was to set the "read only" attribute to off.
This should not have caused a file read problem, and it doesn't in Windows (like, with WinMDI, I can
read from the CD just fine).  This was only a DOS problem . . . and it's fixed.
