The Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigen Workshop is an international group effort to study and characterize leukocyte antigens using antibodies. A major goal is to make this information and/or antibodies available to the scientific community. The first workshop/meeting was held in Paris in 1980 at a time when definition of leukocyte antigens was based largely on histochemistry and serology; subsequent meetings have been held every 3 to 4 years and have provided the "CD" (cluster of differentiation) nomenclature with which most of you are familiar, as a means of categorizing antibodies of similar specificity. The next meeting (HLDA8) will be held in Australia in 2004. For this meeting, antibodies of unknown specificity are being solicited and donated, after the donor's careful screening for elimination of those reacting with known antigens. If anyone on the cytometry mailing list would like to submit and/or study antibodies which react predominantly with Myeloid cells, please let me know by email (below). Although the workshop has historically been restricted to the study of human antigens, I would welcome murine counterparts as well. It is not too late to participate. Please note that studies are not restricted and can cover not only expression, but also structure and function; in addition, we encourage utilization of techniques and information from genomics and proteomics, phage display, microarray, etc. The URL for HLD8 is: www.hlda8.org If interested in Myeloid cells, please contact me: Sanna M.
