I just wanted to thank everybody who reponded to my questions regarding the Medicare reimbursement issues for flow cytometry due to incorrect ICD9 code selection. Since some of you asked me to let you know the outcome since they had similar problems, here it is. The most helpful advice came from: 1. Bruce Davis (davisb@mmc.org): as a CCS representative he has been successful in educating 3rd party payers as to the practical issues. The 2 ICD9 codes that are generally accepted and appropriate for the typical flow scenarios are 785.9 (lymphadenopathy) and suspicious disease process (795.4). He suggested a meeting with the Medical Insurance carrier which (in our case Medicare) they promptly responded to, they are going to recommend these codes to their policy committee for inclusion on the flow cytometry policy. 2. Jeanine Holden (jholden@emory.edu): She has had experience regarding these issues in Georgia and was apparently very successful (see www.gamedicare.com/Policies/197.htm) Jeannine and Bruce, hope you don't mind me passing on your e-mail addresses to others who might need help but we thought you were an excellent resource. Again, thanks for you help! Andrea Illingworth DCDS Flow Cytometry Bangor, Maine 04401 Tel: 207-990-4855
