Re: Reading Cellquest files

Hi Mike,

There is a common snag in transfering to foreign file systems from Macs: in
an effort to preserve information on placement of icons, the notorious
resource fork, as well as the data all in one package, macbinary was
developed. This is often the default transfer format for mac ftp programs,
it allows transfer of mac files to other systems and then back to mac with
no loss of information. Unfortunately some of this information gets
inserted as a header before the actual data, and if opened on a PC etc, the
file appears corrupted.

The answer to this problem is to explicitly set the transfer type to Raw
Binary if transferring by ftp/http, or to use IBM format discs instead.
Binary transfer means that some macintosh OS information will be lost (eg
icon placement, file type and creator), although the data will stay intact,
disc transfers will keep that information in a directory and file hidden
from windows.

This may not be relevant, but I hope it helps,

Ray
