yeast gfp background

Thought I might get some advice from those of you who are looking at live
yeast transfected with gfp.  We seem to be getting very high backgrounds
when analyzing for gfp with yeast.  Somewhere in my travels I had heard
that it was better to grow yeast in synthetic media before analyzing by
FACS for gfp.  Has anyone heard of that and if so could you supply the
formulation?
