Jeff,
We used to fill in a hood. Later, when I bought a new sorter, space was a
premium. So, the hood was expendable. Since then (~3 years) we do it "in the
open." No problems. (funny story . . . we had an old 6' containment hood for a
while . . . the two times we filled our tanks in the hood, we got contamination . .
.) ((how sad is it that I think that's funny?))
Note that "in the open" is relative, though. We take precautions to maintain as
clean a fill area as possible, rinse tanks and filtering components with bleach
and/or ethanol before filling, cover tanks as they fill, and filter all sheath
fluid through 0.2 micron cartridges before use. Keep it clean first . . . easier
than decontaminating later.
MAK.
