comparing different populations

Dear all,
I am relatively new to the field and have a question about comparing
different populations. Recently I heard a talk where somebody compared
surfacemarkers on lymphocyte from two populations (patients vs normal). It
seems they observed a lower expression of one marker in the patient
population. They presented the data as mean plus/minus standarddeviation of
mean fluorescence. This analysis of flow data seemed very wrong to me, but
since I am not an expert in the field I did not speak up. Could someone with
expertise tell me if I was wrong or right? I know they did not do
"quantitative" flowcytometry.
Thanks in advance
