Dear Marty,

Many years ago, (about 1987), I was working on a graduate degree
project that involved chromosome sorting. I was sorting CHO chromosomes
with propidium iodide. I found this phenomenon as well. Granted, I was
sorting on a Coulter 751 with a 5 Watt Argon laser, which considerably
photobleached the PI, and I'm not sure what the smaller 15 mW lasers
would do these days. When I would sort the chromosomes and then run
them back through the cytometer, they would be much dimmer as a result
of interaction with the laser. They also would fall out of the gate as
you describe. Hope this helps.
