RESEARCH SPECIALIST

Howard Hughes Medical Institute is seeking a Research Specialist I in
Flow Cytometry for our site at the Yale University School of Medicine.

The purpose of the position is multiparameter flow cytometyric
analysis using up to three lasers and four colors, and collection of
fluorescently labeled cell populations for investigators in the
Section of Immunobiology. Major duties of the position are the
operation of and maintenance for two B-D fluorescence-activated cell
sorters and maintenance and troubleshooting on two
investigator-operated BD analytical flow cytometers. Desired skills
include: ability to operate and maintain complex scientific
equipment, preferably including fluid-handling and/or optical
instruments; and knowledge of computer systems preferably including
networking and the Macintosh operating system. The position requires
the ability to work for a very diverse set of investigators, learning
from those with extensive FACS experience and guiding those with
little. The candidate will receive on-the-job training as necessary
from the current FACS operator, but must be able to work with minimal
supervision. The candidate should monitor new technical developments
in the flow cytometry field and will be involved in implementing new
techniques and sorting strategies. Most of the work will be the
isolation of cell populations for investigators on the sorter. Other
responsibilities will include quality assurance checks on the
analytical cytometers as well as troubleshooting and fixing minor
problems for those machines. Teaching
students/postdocs/investigators basics of flow cytometry will also be
a part of the duties from time to time. Experience in a laboratory,
working with cell populations and with instrumentation, is essential.
Prior experience with flow cytometry is desirable. A Bachelor's
degree plus 4 years laboratory experience or a Master's degree plus 2
years laboratory experience is required.
