Hello, This is a quick summary to my query about Linux versus NT for a cytometry data backbone. I got 22 replies!...18 were pro-linux. Four have already switched from NT to Linux (two siting the cost of license fees as the reason, the other two siting local expertise and reliability issues)...2 others currently have NT and are planning to switch instead of converting to Windows 2000. One person will be switching from UNIX to NT because it fits better into their business environment. Some disobeyed my initial plea and preached the evils of Microsoft and the glory of open code...but for the most part everyone gave useful anecdotes along with interesting performance criteria and some data. If this ever becomes an issue for you I would be happy to pass along what I've learned. I am very impressed by the scope of knowledge and the unexpectedly large response to this rather dull topic. I thank those that replied. What a great community. -Bill ***************************** William Hyun, Director Laboratory for Cell Analysis UCSF Cancer Center, Room S129 San Francisco, CA 94143-0808 Office (415)476-2632 Lab (415)476-2631 FAX (415)476-8218 email hyun@cc.ucsf.edu Deliveries: 2340 Sutter Street, Room S129 San Francisco, CA 94115
