I should clarify my comment in this thread because I now see that there are
really two threads here, and I didn't mean to suggest that BD has not been
helpful in some cases.

My comment was directed to the thread that deals with the issue of software
to allow core facilities to log usage. I have suggested to BD several times
that this was a general problem that they should address.

It seems to me that it would be appropriate for BD to develop a solution to
this problem. How about "logging in" to CellQuest, so that CellQuest can
keep the time, rather than using MacLogin or Fileguard. That way it might
be possible to track usage without having to reboot the computer. This
would be especially attractive in an environment where we'd like to run
automated tape backups overnight. We now have difficulty doing this because
we ask everyone to shut down the computer so that they do not get charged
for usage.

This would also be attractive because of the problem that many users have
during bootup of the computer, where the BDPAC init hangs, requiring the
user to shut down and restart. We have certainly asked BD to "fix" this
problem, but we haven't seen anything yet.

My apologies to the group for my previous intemperate (and not very
specific) remarks.

John
