If you look at dotplots FL1/FL2, FL2/FL3, FL1/FL3, and gate populations of interest it's simple to enumerate single-, double-, and triple-positive cells. There is nothing like a real threedimensional plot, OK. If your colleague prefers IBM (for what reason ever...) he may download a copy of the masterpiece "WinMDI" from Joe Trotter (URL: http://facs.scripps.edu/software.html). But also there he has to compare the three flourescence plots. BD files are simply FCS-type files, quite a form of industry standard, Coulter uses a similar structure. WinMDI can digest files from nearly all vendors. If he insists on "real" 3D-plots he could have a look at WinList from Verity Software (available for IBM and Mac), but this would cost "some" money.
