I believe the chaps at Leicester have a good fixative that stabilises 
their cells for a few weeks. They're using it for the NEQAS surveys. I'm 
sorry I don't have other details beyond that but a fixative such as you 
describe would be useful for many small labs that send their samples out 
for testing.
