The second p in apoptosis is silent (ptosis of the eyelid, etc has the
second p silent). Some want to be different and pronounce the t in often,
pronounce centimeters as "santimeters" and even invent new words
("santigrades" instead of degrees Celsius). Some general reviews on
apoptosis actually explain that the p is silent (references on request).
