Dear Richard We use a Shandon Cytospin machine (Shandon Scientific, Runcorn, Cheshire, UK) whereby a small volume of cell suspension (for peripheral blood I would lyse the red cells if you don't need them) is concentrated onto a glass slide by centrifugation, and the suspension liquid is removed by a blotting paper, all in one 5 minute step. The cells dry onto the slide and will usually remain there throughout staining.
