Mitotic Index is a microscopic evaluation of the proliferation activity
of a tissue (e.g. a breast carcinoma).
By counting the cells in mitosis in ten fields at 40X (High Power Fields -
HPF)
you will get the Mitotic Index (1 per 10 HPF, 6 per 10 HPF and so on).
The Mitotic Index is a part of the Tumor Grading with others index such the
tumor dimension, the presence/absence of vessels, the chromatine pattern
and so on.
The Index is not related to the DNA content, it is a simply count .
It is widely used because it is simply to achieve, you just need a
microscope.
