I think that what makes the apoptosis literature sometimes appear contradictory is that this is a very tightly regulated process which can be influenced by many variables: state of activation/maturation of the cell, cell types present, intracellular levels of pro- or anti-apoptotic molecules, cytokines, etc. Thus, slightly different conditions can yield different results.
