apoptosis?

I have a question about apoptosis.

I get almost into trouble following the
discussions about apoptosis. I'm not
really familiar with apoptosis, but I
have learned that apoptosis is one form
of a programed cell death, which is
characterised by DNA fragmentation.

Now, nearly every form of cell death
seems to be apoptosis, independent
of DNA fragmentation. How is this
form of cell death now characterised?
In the literature, everything is possible:
Apoptosis is dependent or independent
on mitochondria, is stimulated or blocked
by the same signal transduction pathway
and so on.

For me, this kind of research looks like
the research on specific kinases as for
example the PKC. The results were also
very confusing (Ca dependent or not..)
until it was clear, that a kinase family exists.

Is it possible, that the same is true for
the programed cell death. Apoptosis is
one member of this family but there are
maybe other members of this family.

Can anybody help me with this problem?

Thanks

Andreas
