I have used this technique with good signal amplification using
streptavidin labeled fluorescent microspheres.  Once you can block the
non-specific binding by the microspheres they really provide a nice
signal.  We presented a poster on the use of Molecular Probes's
streptavidin beads for signal amplification at ISAC in 1996.
