FRET-Fluorescence resonance energy transfer

We are hoping to demonstrate the physical interaction of two cellular
proteins using FRET-Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer. FRET
basically works on the same principles as commercially available
PE/Cy5 tandems. If two fluorochromes are in physical proximity and the
donor emission and receptor excitation spectra match, you get a
non-radiative energy transfer from donor to acceptor molecule with
emission at a wavelength characteristic of the acceptor molecule The
farther the molecules are away, the less transfer you get.

At any rate, I was hoping to do this with a 488nm argon laser with PE
as the donor and either Cy5 or APC as the acceptor. Does anyone have
any technical gems to share either with this pair of dyes or in
general? Thanks.
