Cytomation's History

Cytomation was founded in 1988 with the original mission of improving the performance of flow cytometers. By focusing on high-performance sorting and user-friendly computing, Cytomation developed CICERO®, a universal electronics and computer-interface upgrade for the industry standard flow cytometers of the day. Although CICERO was a retrofit electronics and software system, Cytomation's longer-term goal was to build an advanced cell sorter that would make high-speed cell sorting a reality for both academic and commercial research applications.

In 1993, Cytomation signed an agreement with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) licensing Cytomation to manufacture and market LLNL's "MoFlo®" modular flow cytometer. At the time, MoFlo was the only true high-speed sorter and had been developed to facilitate the sorting of human chromosomes as part of the Human Genome Project.

Cytomation assembled a talented and experienced engineering team to substantially improve and fully develop MoFlo as a multi-purpose, high-performance, high-speed, commercial-grade flow cytometer. In October of 1994, Cytomation's MoFlo was introduced to the market worldwide.

Since 1994, Cytomation has continued to improve the MoFlo cytometer, adding new features and options to increase its speed, automation, efficiency, safety, and intelligence in a wide range of applications. Dynamic collaborations with academic and commercial research facilities worldwide sustain this continuous innovation.

One such collaboration with the Colorado State University Research Foundation, led to the creation of XY, Inc. in 1996. XY, Inc. is emerging as the world leader in the research, development and commercialization of sex-selection techniques in non-human mammals, including cattle, horses, pigs and endangered species.
