The CD4 (T4) antigen is a single-chain transmembrane glycoprotein with a 59 kDa molecular weight. It is found on a specific subset of peripheral T lymphocytes, the so-called "helper" cells. It is present on most thymocytes where it is frequently co-expressed with CD8. CD4 is also expressed on monocytes at a lower density than on CD4+ T cells. CD4+ T cell subset is active in inducing and helping the synthesis of immunoglobulins by B cells. CD4 is an accessory molecule for the MHC class II molecule recognition by helper T cells.CD4 is a receptor for the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). T4 antibody antagonizes HIV effects in vitro. T4 antibody was characterized during the First International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
