The CD3 antigen is a complex of 5 invariable polypeptidic chains, g, d, e, z and h, whose molecular weights are respectively: 25-28, 20, 20, 16 and 22 kDa.The z chain frequently occurs in the CD3 complex as a disulphide linked homodimer. CD3 is part of a bigger complex which includes the T cell receptor. It is expressed by mature T cells and by thymocytes. T cell activation can be induced when foreign antigen is presented to the T cell receptor through the MHC complex. These antibodies also have mitogenic effect on T lymphocytes. They do not react with those T cells that lack the T cell receptor. UCHT1 antibody reacts with the e-chain of the CD3 complex. UCHT1 was characterized during the First International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens. HIT3a antibody was characterized during the Fifth International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
