The battery pack (3 each, AA 1.25 V NiCd cells) retains the last settings
in memory when the machine is switched off, but curiously nothing will be
retained in memory when the batteries are dead even when the console is
switched on. NiCd batteries have a limited number of charge/recharge
cycles, and last about 3-4 years.

The batteries need to be replaced with charged batteries (probably 1.0 V is
sufficient). A full charge will be obtained while the machine is then
switched on. A local electronics store will sell inexpensive individual AA
NiCd batteries and a frame to hold them. Simply remove the dead battery pack
from power interconnect board (it's located to the left rear of the upper
console--take off the left door to access ) and resolder the + and - wires
from the frame to the same leads on the board. Then it's happy sorting.
