S phase

Regarding breast cancers, several studies have found the median S phase
to provide a cut-off between high and low risk tumor behavior.
Following the suggestion of several investigators, we take the median S
phase plus or minus 1% as an "intermediate" S phase level. For most
other tumors, S phase is less well established as a prognostic factor
and perhaps should not be reported. Median S phase may have to be
calculated separately for different tumors. In large cell lymphoma,
for example, our median S phase is 10% (versus 6% for breast
carcinoma). S phase higher than 10% in our experience is an adverse
prognostic factor for large cell lymphoma. /Michael Kornstein, MD,
