DAPI will stain some living cells some of the time; Hoechst 33342 is more
reliable, except that cells with glycoprotein pumps will certainly pump out
the Hoechst dye and probably pump out the DAPI. Verapamil and
trifluoperazine have been used to inhibit the pump; the Los Alamos group
found DiOC5(3) was also effective in this regard, although you probably
wouldn't want to use it if you were doing immunofluorescence with the
Hoechst stained cells.
